Punjab Best in Sports


Punjabis play a wide variety of sports and games, ranging from modern games. To promote traditional games of Punjab, the state government has since 2014 been working on initiatives to promote the Punjab Rural Games. There are a wide variety of traditional games played by children and adults. 

For the fourth time in a row, Punjabi University, Patiala, won the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy for best sports performance at inter-university, national and international competitions by scoring 55,000 points. In a proud moment, four universities of the region have won the top four positions. This was announced after a meeting at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) headquarters in New Delhi on Friday afternoon. Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, won the second spot this time with 34,000 points followed by Kurukshetra University with 18,300 points and Panjab University, Chandigarh, with 13,800 points.

Punjabi University won the prestigious award for being the best varsity in sports in 2014-15, the eighth time since the trophy was instituted in 1956-57.Four years ago, Punjabi University started its grand run by ending the winning streak of Guru Nanak Dev University, which has won the honour a record 22 times.Last year, the President gave away the trophy at Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on August 29, which is National Sports Day.
The Youth Welfare Department organizes activities all year round. The Punjabi University has won unique distinctions in youth festivals organized by the school's Association of Indian Universities in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs, government of India, and other events. Punjabi University was awarded the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for excellence in sports in year 2006-07.
This year, the University achieved the second position in highest sports Award of the country, the
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy. The University has also won the North Zone Inter-University
Cultural Championship for 14th time this year, including winning it six times in a row. This also includes winning
of All India Inter-University youth Championship trophy for record number of nine times.

Panjab University, Chandigarh
The University has playgrounds, a gymnasium and a swimming pool for its sports activities. The Directorate of Sports organises about 70 Inter-College and four to five Inter-University Competitions every year. The Directorate of Sports participates in 62 games both for men and women in the Inter-University Competitions and arranges training camps in these games under the supervision of expert coaches. The University was awarded Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) trophy for the year 2004–05.
